Identifying the Definition and Details of an User Interface (UI)

In today’s digital era, business and daily activities rely more and more heavily on the internet, such as through software, mobile, and web applications. Therefore, various types of startups to large companies compete to offer the best services, with one way to attract customers is creating applications that have an attractive and efficient user interface (UI).

The user interface or UI is a visual display in electronic media, especially applications that are first seen and interacted with by users. In other words, UI becomes an intermediary medium between users and electronic media. This UI display can manifest in the form of design, color, writing and similar aspects that are made as attractive as possible for the convenience of the user.

There are 3 types of UIs that have existed to date, including:

1. Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs): The user interacts with the interface on the screen of the electronic device.

2. Voice-controlled Interfaces (VUIs): Users interact with electronic devices through voice. Examples of this kind of interface are Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, and others.

3. Gesture-based Interfaces: Users interact with space with 3D designs through body movements. Examples of this kind of interface are games or virtual reality (VR) games.

To design the UI of a website or application, we have to consider several things, namely the following:

Users rate the display directly and pay attention to its usability and likeability.

  • Users don’t really care about design, as they just want to complete tasks easily and efficiently.
  • The design should be simple and not too prominent, so that the user can focus more on accomplishing their goals in accessing the UI. For that reason, understand the context and task flows of users’ needs to generate UI with intuition and better user experience.

UI should also be fun and comfortable

  • The design should be predictable, so as not to confuse users and they will enjoy their experience using the app more.
  • If necessary, add gamified elements that can make the design more fun.

UIs must communicate the value of the brand and strengthen user trust

  • Good design is a design that can give the impression of being touched. Users associate good feelings with brands that fit and relate to them. For that reason, users can feel closer to the brand and will continue to use the services.

Applications and websites that use the best UI designs will provide many benefits and advantages, including:

1. Increasing the number of users with applications that are easy and convenient to use. The result is the abundance of good reviews and the UI will be recommended by users.

2. Increase of sales since a good UI can help increase the number of users, resulting in increased transactions and sales.

3. Maximizing the product branding process, as a good UI can improve user experience in transacting and using products, which results in the brand’s strengthening.

An ideal UI should be based on the users’ needs and experience. The UI design should be attractive, have a unique appearance and an easy-to-understand structure. Here are the characteristics of a good and effective UI.

1. Pay attention to the contrast of colors. Balance the contrast between the color of the text and the background to make it easy for the users to read it.

2. Responsive. Make sure the application runs fast and immediately responds, lest users think that the application is continuously stuck or lags and cannot be used.

3. Experiment with designs. Exploring different elements and designs will create results that are unique and fun to work with.

4. Focus on the usability aspect. Make sure users can use the app easily and efficiently even for the first time.

5. Be consistent. Choose one design and use that design for the entire application in order to provide convenience and not make users feel confused and frustrated when using the application.

6. Relevant. The overall appearance of the UI interface should be interrelated and informative.

7. Knows the target user. Make sure the UI design matches the user’s needs and preferences.

8. Pay attention to branding. Users must be able to recognize the brand on every page or application page, especially for new users.

9. Familiar. When users open the app, they know which to click without having to think first.

10. Efficient. The UI design should provide a choice of features, buttons, and menus that are only needed by the user, so that no features are wasted.

Now, we have read the detailed information about the user interface feature, or what is often referred to as the UI. Basically, UI design is not only focused on visual appearance and aesthetics, but also about efficiency and the best responsiveness of the application. Additionally, nowadays most businesses are also competing against each other to create a good UI, because it is very important to build customer loyalty and brand recognition. Besides being able to attract visitors, a good UI design is also able to retain old and new customers and facilitate the relationship between business and customers.
